"Christmas Chimes" by Frances V. Hubbard (1898)

Christmas Chimes.

BY FRANCES V. HUBBARD.

The Christmas chimes, the Christmas chimes,

They take us back to days gone by

When, resting on Judea's plain,

The shepherds watched the star-strewn sky.

And lo! with downward sweep of wing

As angel form appeared in sight:

"Fear not, fear not! behold I bring

Tidings of joy to earth to-night!

Let all rejoice on Christmas morn,

For lo! the Prince of Peace is born!"

The Christmas chimes, the Christmas chimes!

        Again appear the angelic throngs.

With sweetest tones, in happy rhymes,

        They sing, they sing the song of songs;

"all glory be to God on high!

We hail, we hail the Savior's birth!"

The stars join in the melody:

"Good will to men and peace on earth."

And o'er and o'er they sing again,

"Peace, peace on earth, good will to men!"

The Christmas chimes, the Christmas chimes!

Through centuries the song has rung,

The tale been told, a thousand times

In every land, in every tongue.

And o'er and o'er, in glad tones, rings

The song the angels sang, again:

"Lo! Christ is born, the King of Kings,

Peace, peace on earth, good will to men!"

We hail, we hail the Christmas morn,

The day the Prince of Peace was born!

Troy Daily Times. December 24, 1898: 6 col 2.
